The course aims to provide the student with a deepening knowledge and the development of skills and independence of judgment related to the Smart City concept with particular attention to issues related to dynamics of urban development and to the implementation and management of innovative processes whitin the city.
In line with the training objectives defined by the Degree in Architecture, the expected learning outcomes are:
1) provide students with the knowledge tools of and develop their ability to understand the logic, dynamics and tools of analysis of the Smart City concept through the study of the main theories;
2) enable students to develop the ability to apply the acquired knowledge through moments of collective exercises on concrete cases and open discussion on the topics covered by the lessons;
3) lead students to develop their own independent judgment regarding the problems presented during the lessons and to propose and discuss solutions related to the analyzed case studies;
4) increase students' communication skills by urging them to play an active role during the lesson, in particular by arguing their positions in collective dialectical moments;
5) stimulate students to deepen the topics independently, using, in addition to the recommended texts, the various sources of information available (bibliographic, web, social, etc.) in a conscious and critical way.


The prerequisites are indicated in the regulations of the Study Program. In addition to these students must possess linguistic, logical, mathematical and cultural skills consistent with the frequency of a second year of a specialist degree.


The course is divided into a theoretical-conceptual part and a project-work. The contents of the theoretical part are the following:
- The evolution of urban smartness in the academic debate and in the political arena (6 hours)
- The effects of the smart paradigm on the urban structure (2 hours)
- Places and spaces of urban smartness (4 hours)
- Reading and interpreting urban form and function: the role of big, open and crowdsourced data (2 hours)
- Critical success factors for the development of smart cities (2 hours)
- Smart communities, Smart land and Smart industry (2 hours)
- New perspectives: healthy, resilient, bright cities (2 hours)

The project work will concern the "smart" design of an urban district of the metropolitan city of Cagliari or the analysis of a project and its coherence with the "smart strategy" of a city chosen from among those proposed by the teacher.

Teaching Methods

The course is divided into two teaching modules: lectures and project work. The lectures are divided into 7 themes for a total of 20 hours. The most theoretical-conceptual part is combined with a more applicative part with case study analysis. During the lessons space will be given to moments of collective discussion on the topics in question. The project work, to which 20 hours will be dedicated, will take place through the analysis and proposition of integrated solutions for "smart" development. The project will preferably be defined in working groups.
To meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, there is the possibility of live streaming lessons or recordings of the same available online. Furthermore, the project work can be carried out through forms of remote interaction with the available IT supports (Teams, Adobe Connect, Skype, ...).

Verification of learning

The learning assessment is divided into two parts. The first concerns the verification of the theoretical competences acquired during the course and the second of those practices. More in detail, the attribution of the final grade derives from the evaluation of the project work (in thirtieths) and from the outcome of a test with 3 open questions. Each question has a maximum rating of 10/10. The final evaluation, expressed in thirtieths, is defined by the average of the evaluations reported in the two verification moments. The achievement of a score lower than 18/30 implies the failure to pass the test.

The results will be published and recorded through the Esse3 system.

The evaluation of the exam takes into account the following elements:

1. knowledge of the subject matter;
2. the ability to use the conceptual and analytical tools learned;
3. argumentative ability, even with respect to design choices;
4. knowing how to place the topics covered and the design choices in an organic synthesis framework;
5. the use of an appropriate language (verbal and design).

With reference to the evaluation of each single question, to achieve a sufficient score (6/10), the student must demonstrate to have a basic knowledge of the subject in question (point 1), to be able to answer the question using the adequate conceptual and analytical tools (point 2) developing a sufficient argumentation (point 3), highlighting a sufficient synthesis capacity (point 4) and using a correct language (point 5).
To achieve a score of 10/10, the student must demonstrate to have a deep knowledge of the subject matter (point 1), to be able to answer the questions using expertly the conceptual and analytical tools (point 2) with a high capacity for argumentation (point 3), an excellent capacity for synthesis (point 4) and a correct and appropriate language (point 5).
Depending on the evolution of the epidemiological situation, the open question test can be replaced by remote oral interviews using virtual platforms (moodle, Teams, etc.).
