Objectives of the course:
1) Knowledge and understanding
• achieving methodological and operational knowledge in the field of road design in urban areas with specific reference to the mobility of disadvantaged users;
• Acquisition of multidisciplinary intellectual, technical and scientific knowledge for the design of accessible urban spaces;
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
• Acquisition of appropriate orientation skills to specialized areas having relevancy with the discipline (transport engineering, urban planning, lighting engineering, green design, etc.).
• knowledge of the main design techniques of accessibility of road spaces with particular attention to pedestrian pathways and disadvantaged users.
• know how to read and apply the national and international design standards for accessibility and overcoming architectural barriers.
3) Autonomy of judgment
• ability to identify critical issues in an urban area and identify useful interventions to encourage the inclusion of people with limited mobility. Ability to analyze the critical situation and identify the best technical solutions.
4) Communicative Skills
• sensitivity to addressing socio-cultural issues related to urban life and mobility;
• ability to present and transfer to non-technical figures the importance and purpose of the intervention;
5) Learning Skills
• Identifying design solutions that reduce or eliminate critical issues in urban design, using the design concepts learned during the course.
It is recommended to have already attended the course "Public Space and Mobility"

11. The design of an urban barrier-free environment
The course is divided into two parts.
Part A concerns the issues related to the architectural barriers overcoming and design instructions for a total amount of 20 hours.
Part B concerns the characteristics of a Plan for overcoming architectural barriers for a total amount of 10 hours.
It concerns the application of design principles on the elimination of architectural barriers applied to a real case for a total amount of 10 hours.
The teaching will be delivered simultaneously both in presence and online, thus outlining a mixed teaching that can be enjoyed in university classrooms but also at a distance. At the beginning of the semester, each student can opt, with a binding choice, for face-to-face or distance teaching. Depending on the availability of the classrooms and the number of students who opt for the face-to-face mode, there may be a shift for effective classroom access.
Verification of learning
The test consists of two test having as target the main content of the course divided in two parts (part A e part b). Secondly there is a practical exercise (individual and group), aimed at the application of the project contents explained in class. The final vote, therefore, will depend on the quality and fairness of the student exposure during the written tests and on the quality of the exercise, averaging the votes had in every individual tests. Examination is deemed to be exceeded if the average is greater than 18/30, whatever the individual votes.
