1 - Mod. Survey
The overall aim of the course is to develop the student skills related to the analysis and understanding of the architectural survey. In particular it will be developed:
- Knowledge and understanding: main aim of the survey module is to provide students with useful knowledge to read and interpret architectural and urban contexts. The knowledge of the building and its urban context are prerequisites for the survey operations, on the basis of knowledge of the historical, architectural and typological constructive culture reference, and of the different approaches of architectural survey in relation to the themes of the restoration. Knowledge will be conjugated with the use of the drawing tools and the fundamental survey and representation techniques, together with understanding of different issues on the relationship between representation, architectural surveys and restoration.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to define and evaluate the most appropriate methods and tools according to the purposes of the survey and the peculiarities of the specific working contexts, integrating the use of different survey methods. Define the project's survey through the different stages of knowledge, measurement and graphic representation.
- Making judgements: ability to a critical and synergistic use of different methods and techniques for the measurement data and graphical analysis of architecture.
- Communication skills: ability to get and integrate the information from several sources such that it is possible to achieve a deeper and conscious communication of the architectural features. Ability to articulate technical and scientific concepts of architecture drawing and surveying in archaeological, architectural and urban contexts.
- Learning skills: ability to integrate knowledge from various sources in order to achieve a broad understanding of the issues related to the architectural survey.
2 - Mod. Restoration
The main goal of the course is to allow the student to upgrade his personal knowledge and skill in order to cope with a complex architectural restoration project, in coherence with theoretical principles, legislation and administrative procedures.
- Knowledge and understanding: the student will acquire the ability to analyse the architectural artefact and the historical urban systems, based on the available documentary sources, the direct analysis of the sites, also through the stratigraphic methods and instrumental diagnostics. He will also be able make design choices in the perspective of the conservation of authentic historical matter and of the possible modification, both functional and formal.
- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to choose the most appropriate cognitive methodologies and investigation tools for understanding the historical artefact and its context, and to conduct a targeted selection of techniques intervention.
- Autonomy of judgment: the student will develop the ability to identify the values of pre-existences and the role of the contemporary design in the conservation and enhancement process, identifying sustainable, appropriate and innovative solutions.
- Communication skills: the student will develop the ability to communicate with an appropriate vocabulary - written, oral and graphic - technical and scientific contents in the field of restoration in archaeological, architectural and urban field.
- Learning skills: the student will have the ability to integrate the knowledge acquired in the field of complementary subjects learned throughout the educational path, in order to achieve a transdisciplinary and multi-scale vision of the problems related to the practice of architectural restoration.

2 Mod. Restoration
The course deepens, through explanatory case studies, the different approaches of the CONTEMPORARY RESTORATION and the protagonists of the conservation theory and practice in the late twentieth century, with specific regards to the modern schools of restoration (principles, outcomes, commingling, and compromises).
The restoration project will start from the ACKNOWLEDGE PROJECT, based on the encoding and interpretation of literature, iconographic and archival sources, and the preparing of the historic and illustrative report, as enshrined in legislation (10 hrs). Methodologies and tools for specific purposes will also be illustrated during this step:
- Stratigraphic analysis for the comprehension of the architectural evolution of the buildings and for their relative and absolute dating.
- Analysis of degradation and of material and structural consistency;
- Plans of diagnostics;
- Identification of elements with historical-artistic interest and their mapping (cataloguing and Raumbuch)
- Assessment of values related to material and immaterial aspects.
Based on the knowledge outcomes and in the light of the specific regulatory framework, the PROJECT OF RESTORATION (20 hours) will be developed, methodologically divided into the following focuses:
- Identification of problems to definition of possible solutions;
- Identification of conservation techniques;
- Analysis of compatible functions and definition of possible reuse programs;
- Design of adaptive or integrative interventions;
- Plan and design of Adjustments and improvements in functional and performance, depending on regulatory requirements, architectural compatibility, cultural sustainability;
- Design of the elements required for the integration of the gaps, considering material, architectural and urban gaps, and study of historical interfaces for the design of ancient/new integration;
- Monitoring, enhancement and management.
The course will also provide basic knowledge of CATALOGUE AND DOCUMENTATION (ICT, information systems and databases for the restoration (2 hours) and includes THEMATIC SEMINARS and VISITS TO SEVERAL PILOT SITES.
The student will prepare a detailed restoration design of an artefact, accompanied by drawings and documentation.
1 - Mod. Survey: Lectures and laboratory teaching, performing with individual drawings and group graphic representations. Graphic exercises in the classroom and on the studied site. Lectures: 12 hours; laboratory exercises: 38 hours.
To meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, the possibility of live streaming lessons or recordings of the same available online is provided. Furthermore, the laboratory activities are carried out through forms of remote interaction with the available computer media. Based on the situation related to the Covid-19 pandemic, for laboratory activities and for on-site exercises, shifts and / or online replacement activities may be envisaged.
2 Mod. Restoration
The restoration module will be carried out with a priority operational cut, focusing on the experiences and on the illustrations of case studies, encouraging participation in conferences and 'lectures' of visiting professors and of national and international experts, in workshops, discussion seminars, study trips, but also integrating with the Erasmus exchanges, the training internships and the preparation of the degree thesis.
In relation to the processing and communication tools, the use of ICTs will be encouraged, as well as planned moments of sharing and presentation of the work produced and the results achieved.
Verification of learning
1 - Mod. Survey: At the end of the Survey Module, there will be a mid-term test: all the graphics documentation made in the classroom is one of the requirements for access to the mid term test . The intermediate test provides a partial interview in which the student will be called to discuss the drawings done with theoretical insights. The oral test is passed if the student responds correctly to two questions on various topics of the course program. An excessively insufficient response may compromise the whole oral examination. The final grade is determined by the evaluation of the graphic boards and final oral exam. The oral exam consists of a discussion on topics covered by the lectures. The student must demonstrate knowledge and mastery of the subjects taught during the course. At the end of the second semester, at the conclusion of the Restoration Module, will host the final examination.
2 - Mod. Restoration: With reference to this module, the student will demonstrate the knowledge of the theoretical issues discussed during the course, setting out the restoration project done.
Only students that have a number of occurrences equal to or greater than 75% will be admitted to the exam.
Outcomes contribute to the final vote on the submission of the restoration project and the oral interview. The oral exam consists of three questions pertaining to three different topics of the course program, through which the student must demonstrate that they have acquired a critical knowledge of personal discipline.
The theme of the laboratory will involve all the different parts of the integrated course and will consist in the survey, analysis and restoration project of a building.
In order to simplify the operations of detection, buildings will be selected among those part of urban plazas and squares.
For each building analyzed, the student will have to:
1. Mod. Survey:
A. Elaborate a graphical analysis at the urban and architectural scale both through the drawing on location and the study of iconographic and cartographic sources;
B. Identify the floor and the roof plans of the block, with particular reference to the roof plans of the block and the definition of the building units;
C. Elaborate some graphical representations of the studied context;
D. Develop a 3D digital model of the building on a 1: 100 scale;
E. Elaborate some graphical representations of architectural elements (constructive and typological characters schedules);
F. Metric survey of the façade by means of photogrammetry techniques, with graphical depiction of the surface characteristics, such as materials and discontinuities, on a 1: 50 scale.
1. Mod. Restoration:
A. Analyze the historical and urban classification, the typological and morphological aspects, the state of preservation;
B. Reconstruct the genesis and the stratigraphic evolution of the urban fabric, identify the information needs investigable through the instrumental diagnosis, identify the criteria and procedures for restoration, experimenting, if necessary, different approaches.
Each student will study a single building, but each one will have to compare his own restoration choices with the solutions adopted by the colleagues for the nearby buildings in order to acquire a good understanding of the impact of the single architectural project on urban scenes.

To carry the theme of the year, the architectural building chosen will be surveied and drawed during the Survey module, while the Restoration will aim to the analysis and the restoration project. In detail, in the first phase the students will provide to the analysis and the mapping of materials and degradation phenomena, as well as to the chronological definition of the structures, while in the second phase tey will continue with the definition of design solutions that aim to the maintenance, the conservation and restoration of the architectural work, and with the documentation of the project through the ICT systems.
The laboratory activity will be carried out with the division into working groups consisting of no more than 3 students with similar career commitments.
