Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)


- Knowledge and understanding: The course will provide the fundamentals related to i) air pollution phenomena and means for air pollution control; ii) removal of air pollutants from gaseous emissions into the atmosphere.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: The student will have the ability to identify the technical solution to be implemented in the context of an air pollution problem and to size the main devices required for compliance with the emission limits and air quality objectives.
- Making judgements: the student will be able to process and critically interpret a situation of pollution by gaseous emissions and formulate an appropriate technical choice for its resolution, taking into account the best available techniques.
- Communication skills: the student will be able to communicate using the technical English terminology.
- Learning skills: The student will be able to expand its knowledge independently by drawing from different bibliographic sources.


Basic knowledge of Basic Physic and Chemistry. Basic knowledge of Reaction Kinetics, Transport Phenomena, Hydraulics and Thermodynamics.


The course is structured in four Learning Units.
U1 - Air pollution essentials (17 h Lessons; 6 h Exercises)
Defining air pollution. Classification and general properties of air pollutants (primary and secondary).
Sources of air pollutants. Air pollution measurements: ambient monitoring and source salmpling. Emission factors. Emission inventory.
Scales of the air pollution problem. Acid Rain, Greenhouse effect. Ozone layer depletion.
U2 - Air Pollution legislation: Emission ceilings and Air Quality Standards (2 h Lessons).
U3 - Air pollution control devices (21 h Lessons; 8 h Exercises).
Control of particulates: gravity settlers, cyclones, electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, particulate scrubbers.
Control of gases and vapors. Adsorption, Wet scrubbing, Thermal/Catalytic combustion, Biofiltration.
Control of Sulfur Oxides. Control by prevention. Fluidized bed Combustion. Fuel desulfurization.
Control of Nitrogen Oxides. Control by prevention. Combustion Modification. Flue gas treatment.
Control of VOCx. Control by prevention. Adsorption/absorption. Biological oxydation. Catalytic combustion.
U4 - Dispersion of pollutants into the atmosphere (4 h Lessons; 2 h Exercises).
Basics of meteorology. The Gaussian model for atmospheric dispersion. Tall Stacks and plume rise.

Teaching Methods

The course envisages both frontal lessons (65%) and exercises (35%). Lessons are performed with the use of slide presentation and blackboard. During lectures, links to other disciplines addressed in the degree program are evidenced and participation of students in the discussion of the topics is encouraged. A 2 hr seminar on the health effects of air contaminants is held by a medical expert. A 2 hr seminar on the Environmental Impact Assessment related to industrial plants is held by an expert from the Sardinian Regional Government. The exercises deal with the resolution of numerical problems concerning the sizing of air pollution control devices. A technical visit to industrial plant equipped with systems for the control of the air contaminants is expected.

Verification of learning

The exam consists of a written exercise and an oral. A sufficient score (>= 18/30) is needed to gain access to the oral exam. The written exam will verify the capacity of solving a problem related to air pollution phenomena and sizing the principal treatment devices for air pollution control. The oral exam will ascertain the knowledge and understanding of air pollution phenomena and air pollution control and the ability to analyze environmental issues by linking the different topics covered during the course. The written exam accounts for a third of the final grade.
