KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY OF COMPRESSION
The student during the course of microbiology acquires different knowledge such as:
• Structure, morphology and bacterial classification.
• Metabolism, pathogenicity and bacterial genetics.
• Mechanism of action of microbial toxins.
• Antibiotic and chemotherapeutic action mechanism.
• Structure, morphology, replication and classification of viruses.
• Patogenic action of viruses and their role in non-pathogenesis.
• Antiviral drugs.
• General characteristics of mycoses and protozoa.
• Characteristics of the main species of microbes that affect human and animal pathology.
• Immune response to infections
CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION (COMPETENCE)
• Basic knowledge of Microbiology will allow the student to understand the relationships that microorganisms establish with the host under normal and pathological conditions and to understand which microbial factors contribute to maintaining the homeostatic equilibrium of the organism.
• In addition, the study of the biology of bacteria, viruses, yeasts and protozoa will provide the student with the basic theoretical skills to apply them to the microbiological methodologies (human, animal and environmental microbiological diagnosis).
• Knowledge of pathogenicity mediated by toxic microbial products will be fundamental to the toxicologist's professional activity.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
• The student, after learning the principles of microbiology, will be able to autonomously apply this knowledge in any field (medical, environmental, food, etc.)
• Will be able to interpret and solve problems related to these issues
The student with such microbiological notions will have the opportunity to communicate their knowledge with appropriate formal language and written communications
The knowledge of Microbiology will be useful for the student to continue with absolute autonomy the learning and knowledge of the subjects of the subsequent studies
Knowledge of the structure and biology of bacterial cell, viruses and fungi. Knowledge of microbial metabolism. Knowledge of microbial genetics, DNA transfer and genetics recombination in bacteria, mechanisms of action of antimicrobial drugs and mechanism of insurgence of resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Knowledge of host-parasite relationships and infection
Structure and characteristics of animal and vegetal cells. Organic molecules of biological significance. Cellular metabolism.
The student will have a greater understanding of microbiology and clinical microbiology if he has knowledge of biology, anatomy, chemistry and biochemistry
The course is 8 credits
60 hours of classroom lessons with the help of Power Point presentations
14 hours: introduction to the subject, short history of microbiology. Differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Structure, chemical composition and function of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. Structure, chemical composition, function and synthesis of the bacterial wall, cytoplasmic organelles, ribosomes, nucleocapsid, S layer, pili, flagella. Bacterial genetics. Bacterial metabolism, growth curve, nutritional needs
2 hours: normal flora of the human body. Sterilization and disinfection
2 hours: genetic recombination, transformation, transduction, conjugation
2 hours: principles of immunology: antigen, hapten, immune response
2 hours: structure and function of the different classes of antibodies
4 hours: bacterial pathogenicity (mechanism of toxin action)
4 hours: mechanism of action of antibiotics and chemotherapy
12 hours: main classes of bacteria and their pathologies
2 hours: essential principles of fungi
2 hours: essential principles of parasites
4 hours: morphology, chemical structure, virus replication strategies. Role of viruses in oncogenesis
6 hours: main classes of viruses and their pathologies
4 hours: microbiological techniques
The microbial world. Protists. Prokaryotes. Principles of classification. Description of the principals groups of bacteria. Optical methods. Staining (frontal lessons and lab exercises: 6 hours).
Eukariotic and prokariotic cell structure. Morphological changes during growth. Endospores. Cultivation of microorganisms. Factors affecting growth. The growth curve (frontal lessons and lab exercises: 6 hours).
Microbial metabolism. The role of metabolism in biosynthesis and growth. The regulation of metabolic pathways, RNA synthesis, DNA synthesis and cell division. (6 hours).
Microbial genetics. The prokaryotic chromosome. Mutation. Intercellular DNA transfer, and genetic recombination in bacteria. Transformation. Plasmid-mediated conjugation. Transduction. Transponsable elements. Molecular cloning of DNA. (6 hours).
Bacteriophages. Properties and replication of DNA and RNA phages. Lysogeny. (2 hours)
General properties of viruses. Definitions. Classification of viruses. Principles of virus structure. Replication. Pathogenesis of virus diseases. Prevention and treatment of viral infections. Host-parasite relationships. Infection. Disease. virulence factors. Bacterial toxins. Endotoxin. Microorganisms of clinical significance (12 hours)
Disinfectants. Sterilization. (6 hours).
48 hours total of frontal lessons and lab exercises
The course lasts about 4 months (6 hours of lessons per week), 60 hours of classroom lectures with the help of Power Point presentations.
To meet the specific teaching needs related to the epidemiological situation, teaching will be delivered simultaneously both in presence and online, thus outlining a mixed teaching that can be enjoyed in university classrooms but also at a distance. At the beginning of the semester, each student can opt, with a binding choice, for face-to-face or distance teaching. Depending on the availability of the classrooms and the number of students who will opt for the attendance mode, there may still be a shift for actual classroom access.
Verification of learning
The final verification is performed after the students have taken the exam in Animal Biology and Human Anatomy.
The student's learning is verified during the course by means of written tests (optional). The final evaluation is carried out taking into account the results obtained in any written tests and in the final oral test.
The attribution of the mark is made in relation to the expression and use of the appropriate scientific language and the preparation demonstrated.
Following the epidemiological situation, written learning tests can be eliminated or replaced by tests on Moodle or questions on Teams
