Students should gain a basic knowledge of nuclear reactor physics. In addition they should have a general view of the advantages and/or problems connected to the different types of reactors.
As a consequence, they should be able to have a complete and objective sight of the problem of energy production, understanding when nuclear reactors are needed, the correct choice of one type of reactor and the risk/advantage correlated to the choice.


This academic course is a "stand alone" one.
Neverthless, the complete understanding of the course requires the knowledge of many concepts acquired from the basic academic courses:
- classical mechanics: force, energy, power, conservation laws of energy, momentum and angular momentum, elastic scattering
- electomagnetism
- mathematics: infinitesimal calculation (derivatives, integrals, differential equations, operators)


The course is divided into six parts:
- basics and radioactivity (15 hours)
- nuclear fission physics (15 hours)
- Neutron moderation and diffusion (5)
- different types of nuclear reactors (15 hours)
- radiation protection(3 hours)
- security, incidents (3 hours)
- short outiline of nuclear fusion reactors (4 hours)

Teaching Methods

The theaching methods can be slightly different depending on the response of the students, however a general scheme is:
- frontal lessons (50 hours)
- exercise (5 hours)

Verification of learning

Student is invited to discuss three (at least) arguments concerning the course, besides a simple exercise.

More Information

The lectures are always given with the aid of PPT files. They allow to use complicate graphics, animations and short movies not esily available in any other way.
A not negligible amount of hours is dedicated to the exercises, but only solving exercises students acquire the orders of magnitude of the phenomena they are studying.
