Objectives

This is an introductory course presenting the basic approaches for the analysis and control of linear dynamical systems in discrete time.

Dublin descriptors:
- Knowledge and understanding of digital dynamical systems and of the formalism used to describe them.
- Applying knowledge and understanding to solve original problems concerning modeling, analysis and control of digital dynamical systems.
- Making judgements: how to manage the complexity of a system with digital components, by abstracting its behavior by means of a mathematical model.
- Communication skills: precise specification of the dynamical behavior of a digital system and of its specifications.
- Learning skills for advanced courses on systems theory by accessing.

Prerequisites

Knowledge obtained during the automatic control courses of the laurea degree, related to analysis and control of dynamical systems in continuous time.

Contents

1 - Introduction to digital systems (2h lecture)

2 - Analysis of discrete time linear time-invariant systems (4h lecture, 2h homework)
State variable model, input-output model, modes, stability, step response.

3 - Z transform (4h lecture, 2h homework)
Elementary definitions and properties, transforms of canonical functions, inverse transformation, transfer function, filters.

4. Sampled-data systems ((3h lecture, 2h homework)
Sampled-data systems with delays, zeros and poles of sampled-data systems.

5. Analysis and synthesis of digital control systems in continuous time (4h lecture, 2h homework)
Ideal sampler, Shannon’s theorem, zero-order hold, synthesis in continuous time and discretization of a controller, discretization approaches, choice of the discretization time.

6. Synthesis in the domain of the complex variable z (3h lecture, 2h homework)
Specifications in z, root locus, model assignment approach, pole assignment approach.

Teaching Methods

The course includes theoretical lectures (20h) and exercise sessions (10h). Exercises assigned to students shall be solved in class or in the lab under the instructor’s supervision and later discussed in class.

Verification of learning

Students taking the course may take a final written exam. All other exams are oral.
