Objectives

Knowledge and understanding of the design criteria of planar RF cicruits and antennas.

Applying knowledge and understanding: define and evaluate the operative features of a planar RF circuit, starting from its electromagnetic behaviour.

Making judgements: provide a critical and synergistic use of the methods and techniques for the analysis and design of a planar RF circuit.

Communicating skill: clearly express technical ideas and proposals.

Learning skills: acquire information from different sources in order to achieve a deeper and conscious insight in the electromagnetic characterisation of a planar RF circuit.

Prerequisites

knowledge of the main physical phenomena related to electromagnetic field propagation; Transmission Line Theory; differential calculus; ordinary differential equations; vectorial algebra; matrices; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; Fourier and Laplace transform.

Contents

Propagation in TEM and q-TEM planar structures. Microwave circuits: Power dividers, directional couplers, Phase shifters.

Teaching Methods

Lecture = 40 h
Exercises & Laboratory = 10 h

Verification of learning

The final evaluation of the student consists of an oral test in which two questions are proposed. The score of the examination will be mainly attributed based on the answers to the questions proposed in the final oral examination.

In order to pass the exam the student must demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of all the topics of the course, a basic knowledge of the topics covered in the tutorials and laboratory work.
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demostrate an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course.
