Fundamental concepts relative to chemical engineering will be introduced during the course. In particular, basic knowledge of (integral) mass balances to be applied in transformation processes will be provided. Appropriate analytical solution strategies will be acquired and applied in simple systems.

Acquiring knowledge and understanding
During this course students will begin to acquire basic knowledge and understanding relative to integral material balances to be applied in simple transformation processes.

Applying knowledge and understanding
The course is organized to have theoretical aspects always coupled with several practical problems, characterized by progressively increased complexity, that have to be solved in class. This fact prompt students to participate actively in the identification of the problems solution.
At the end of the course, students will be able to set up and solve analytically simple problems involving material balances.

Making informed judgments and choices
The practical application of material balances acquired during the “Introduction to Chemical Engineering” course helps students to develop their capability in the critical evaluation of the obtained results, to highlight the most relevant outcomes and to decide which approximations are more appropriate.

Communicating knowledge and understanding
During the practical written tests foreseen in the course as well as the final evaluation test, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their capability to communicate in written form the obtained results and underline the encountered problems.

Capacities to continue learning
The basic knowledge on material balances provided during the “Introduction to Chemical Engineering” course improves students capability to handle autonomously new, albeit simple, problems that are not examined in class.


Knowledge of calculus and physics, at the high school level, and chemistry, at the bachelor level, is required.


Introduction to the course (1h Lecture)

Units, dimensions, and conversions of units (2h Lecture + 3h Practical)
Units and dimension. Conversion of units. Systems of units. Dimensional homogeneity and dimensionless quantities.

Processes and process variables (2h Lecture + 2h Practical)
Mass, volume and density. Mass and volumetric flow rate. Flow rate measurement. Chemical composition. Temperature and pressure: definition and measurement.

Mass balances (10h Lecture + 10h Practical)
Process classification: batch, continuous, and semi-batch processes. Principle of mass conservation. The general balance equation: meanings of terms. Types of balances: differential and integral. Balances on continuous steady-state processes. Integral balances on batch processes. Degree-of-freedom analysis. Mass balance in non reactive systems with a single unit. Mass balance in reactive systems with a single unit. Mass balance in non reactive systems with multiple-units. Mass balance in reactive systems with multiple-units. Multiple reactions, yield, and selectivity. Recycle and bypass.

Teaching Methods

The course (30 hours) consists in 15 hours lectures and 15 hours practical classes. Theoretical aspects will be tackled during lectures. In addition, the solution of practical problems will be always considered by the lecturer along with the theoretical part. The lecturer will involve the students in the examination of practical problems, to verify their acquired knowledge and understanding relative to the subject under discussion. The achieved level will be better evaluated during practical classes, to be performed either in group or singularly, to stimulate students to collaborate or handle autonomously, respectively.
Lectures will be prevalently held in classrooms, also integrated with online teaching resources, by using specific online platforms managed by the University of Cagliari

Verification of learning

A written test is carried out at the end of the course. The test consists of a list of queries including both theoretical aspects and practical problems. To pass the test, students have to receive a positive evaluation, based on their replies to the queries, proving they have acquired a sufficient or better knowledge on the proposed topics.
