Students will have an introduction to the theory and practice of quantitative analysis, in particular that applied to environment. At the end of course the student will be aware in understanding the volumetric titration, some instrumental technique and the significance of a numeric value and its error.
General Chemistry and fundamental concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry.
Basic knowledge – Weighting and errors; glassware ; preparation of standard solutions; concentrations units; titrations and use of indicators.
Classic titration procedures - Acid-base titrations. Argentometric titrations. Complexometric titrations.
Error evaluation in analytical chemistry - Systematic Errors. Casual Errors. Mean and standard deviation. Significant digits. Error propagation.
Sampling – Sampling procedures. Significance of sample. conservation, stabilization and preservation of samples.
UV-vis molecular absorption spectroscopy – Apparatus. Absorption spectra. Beer-Lambert-Bouguer law. Deviations: deviations due to instrument factors. Deviations depending on concentration and pH. Choice of best operating conditions. Analytical Applications. Method of standard additions.
Atomic emission spectroscopy–Nature and kind of atomic spectra. Instruments. Samples atomization. Flame and plasma. Analytical Applications.
Atomic absorption spectroscopy - Instruments. Flame atomization. Graphite furnace atomization. Analytical Applications.
Statistic data treatment – Confidence levels. Hypothesis testing. Detection limits. Least squares methods. Calibration curves.
