Educational objectives of teaching
At the end of the course the students will have to possess the cultural bases necessary to evaluate the environmental component, useful for the management and conservation of the landscape and for the Environmental Impact Assessment procedures (EIA) and the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and environmental planning .
Expected knowledge, skills and behavior with reference to learning objectives
Knowledge (knowledge): knowing the right tools to acquire professionalism in the field of planning, design, management and conservation of the territory.
Ability / Capacity (know-how): Knowing how to manage the various phases of the VIA / VAS processes and propose appropriate methods and techniques to deal with the evaluation, design and planning of the plant component in different environmental contexts and at different scales;
Behaviors (knowing how to be): Knowing the tools necessary to be able to tackle the issues of environmental planning, using the most appropriate theories and tools, also knowing how to work with the advice of other professionals.


Knowledge of the basic notions of: ecology, systematic botany, environmental and applied botany and elements of GIS according to the programs foreseen during the three-year degree course. Knowledge of English at a level that allows you to study from texts in English (B1 / B2).


Landscape ecology: the classical pattern approach (patches, corridors, matrices) and alternative landscape models. Characteristics of components and environmental factors, criteria and methods for their analysis and for the prediction of their evolution. Analysis of ecosystem services. Connectivity and fragmentation. Ecological networks. Mitigation and compensation measures. Environmental compatibility criteria. Attribution of weights to expected impacts. Final environmental balance.
Cultural bases and regulations of the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Assessment and its application.

Teaching Methods

Lectures 24 hours. Laboratory / Field 36 hours. Lessons with use of slide and overhead projector. Interactive lesson with the use of educational material in the classroom and case study analysis. Field activities and laboratory work at individual and group level.

Verification of learning

The students must demonstrate that they have attained the learning outcomes defined in the section objectives. The questions will focus on three main topics of the course: cultural bases, regulations and methods for Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Assessment, urban and landscape planning; the role of the naturalist in Environmental Assessment and in the description and interpretation of a case study. The final exam is oral with the presentation of a paper and a final mark. The score of the final examination is attributed with a vote expressed in thirtieths: active student participation will be evaluated during lectures, tutorials and field trips. To pass the exam, and achieve a vote of at least 18/30, students must demonstrate that they have achieved a sufficient preparation compared to the expected learning outcomes as defined in the section objectives. To achieve a score of 30/30 marks, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent preparation compared to learning outcomes above and ability to relate the knowledge acquired during the course.
