KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student is expected to know the fundamentals of basic clinical neurology, neurological semeiotics, and the main laboratory and diagnostic investigations for the investigation of nervous system disorders. A further objective of the integrated course is to provide knowledge on the mechanisms of generation of the pathological electro-cortical signal, on the mechanisms of alteration of the cortical signal, and the mechanisms of alteration of nerve conduction. It will also include the professional figure of the Neurophysiopathology Technician, the technical-practical skills and the transversal skills to be acquired for the exercise of the profession, the functional organization of the Neurophysiology laboratories, and the relational methods to be adopted with patients, medical staff, and health professionals.
APPLICATION SKILLS: The student is expected to be able to recognize the main characteristics of the neurological functions and the related pathological alterations in question and to address the various functional exploration methods as well as to apply the knowledge acquired for the identification of the procedure \ and more suitable instrumentals. The student must understand the pathophysiological nature of the altered electrical signal and show knowledge of the general aspects relating to the exercise of the profession of Neurophysiopathology Technician in the context of the Technical-Diagnostic Health Professions as well as the main diagnostic methods and their field of application. Further application skills to be developed in the integrated course will be related to the ability to describe and identify the characteristics of the recording equipment of neurophysiological signals, recognize the nature of the signal derived from the individual instrumental methods, and attribute specific clinical indications to the various equipment.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: The student is expected to be able to critically read and evaluate the characteristics of the acquired cortical electrical signal and to know the evolution of the professional figure of the Neurophysiopathology Technician, with specific reference to the diagnostic methods of his competence and their application in daily clinical practice. They must also be able to evaluate the pros and cons of various practical solutions associated with registration techniques and understand the rationale behind their application in different clinical situations and be able to independently choose the best solution to specific registration problems.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: the student will be able to carry out the development and outcome of diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions in the neurological and nerve signal conduction fields. He will be able to identify the position of the Neurophysiopathology Technician by framing his role and specific tasks and will have the ability to distinguish the various diagnostic methods he deals with.
LEARNING SKILLS: the student will learn to critically implement their cultural background through the consultation and critical interpretation of recent scientific literature as well as to analyze the signals recorded through the interpretation of the traces presented and discussed during the course of the lessons and to explain the development and outcome of diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions in the field of pathologies of the nervous system.

- Neurological semeiotics: notes on tone, strength, muscles,; osteo-tendon reflexes, coordination, sensitivity, abnormal movements, gait disturbances, dysphagia, diplopia, dizziness, speech disturbances, sphincter disturbances, orthostatic hypotension
- Instrumental tests applied to neurological pathologies: EEG, EMG and VdC, evoked potentials;
- The s. choreo-athetotic (Huntington's chorea, senile chorea, vascular chorea)
- Parkinson's disease
- Neuromuscular diseases with particular reference to S. di Guillain-Barré, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, myasthenia, motor neuron disease, polymyositis-dermatomyositis
- Multiple sclerosis and demyelinating diseases

- Dementias (Alzheimer's dementia, multi-infarct dementia, normotensive hydrocephalus, on a metabolic basis)
- Cerebrovascular diseases

- Mechanisms of generation of the pathological electro-cortical signal (cortical hyperexcitability and diffusion of the paroxysmal signal)
- Mechanisms of cortical signal alteration (metabolic, hypoxic, neoplastic suffering, etc.

Teaching Methods

Interactive lessons aimed at making learners understand both how to approach neurological patients during the execution of neurophysiological examinations and the main indications of neurophysiological examinations in different neurological pathologies

Verification of learning

The number of sessions is defined following the Faculty guidelines. Extra exams for out-of-course can be requested from the teacher for justified reasons. The integrated course includes a joint oral test on the three modules of the course. During the test, questions will be asked to evaluate the candidate's ability to express himself correctly, his ability to expose the concepts presented, and to apply his knowledge to simple problems presented to the candidate. ongoing during the course and final exam with questions related to the main neurological pathologies in the program, with application to neurophysiopathological techniques: for example use of the EEG in the study of coma or epilepsy, of evoked potentials in the study of demyelinating pathologies of the CNS, etc. The evaluation is objective, based on the correctness percentage of each answer (which is associated with a fixed score, not known to the candidate, based on the level of difficulty). The final grade will correspond to the weighted average of the results obtained in the three modules. The evaluation will be expressed out of thirty.
The judgment can be:
Sufficient (from 18 to 20/30)
The candidate demonstrates few acquired notions, superficial level, many gaps, modest expressive skills, but sufficient to support a coherent dialogue; logical skills and consequentiality in connecting elementary level arguments; poor synthesis and graphic expression skills; poor interaction with the teacher during the interview.
Fair (21 to 23)
The candidate demonstrates a fair acquisition of notions, but little in-depth, few gaps; expressive skills more than sufficient to support a coherent dialogue; acceptable command of scientific language; logical skills and consequentiality in the connection of topics of moderate complexity; more than enough capacity for synthesis and graphic expression.
Good (from 24 to 26)
The candidate demonstrates a rather broad knowledge base, moderate in-depth study, with small gaps; satisfactory expressive skills and significant command of scientific language; dialogic ability and critical spirit well noticeable; good synthesis skills and more than acceptable graphic expression skills.
Excellent (from 27 to 29)
The candidate demonstrates a very extensive knowledge base, well studied, with marginal gaps; remarkable expressive skills and the high command of scientific language; remarkable dialogical ability, good competence and relevant aptitude for logical synthesis; high capacity for synthesis and graphic expression.
Excellent (30)
The candidate demonstrates a very extensive and in-depth knowledge base, possibly irrelevant gaps; high expressive skills and high command of scientific language; excellent dialogue skills, a strong aptitude for making connections between different topics; excellent ability to synthesize and great familiarity with graphic expression.
Honors are attributed to candidates clearly above the average, and whose possible notional, expressive, conceptual, or logical limits are, on the whole, completely irrelevant.
