The essential aim of the Course of Pathology and Pathophysiology is to define the concept of disease and to identify the etiologic factors and underlying mechanisms through which these act by establishing a direct link between the basic and clinical disciplines. This should enable the student to establish causal relationships between etiological factors and specific diseases.
The program includes, in particular, the discussion of genetic diseases, the causes of illness by physical, chemical and biological agents, the mechanisms of cell death, the inflammatory process, the neoplastic development, metabolism disturbances and basic pathophysiological processes in the various organs and systems.

Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, Histology, Anatomy,

General Pathology: Cellular stress and mechanism of adaptation, cell injury and cell death ( necrosis and apoptosis) -Acute and chronic inflammation - Repair, regeneration and fibrosis - Cell proliferation and differentiation-Molecular bases of genetic diseases: Point mutations, frameshift mutations) – Genetic diseases: autosomal dominant, recessive and related to X.- Chromosome abnormalities) - Causes of diseases: injuries from physical agents (radiation). Biotransformation of endogenous and exogenous agents. Environmental and occupational disease, smoking, alcohol, chemically-induced injury. Ageing.
-Oncology: Principles of cancer epidemiology, Definition and Terminology. Characteristics of benign and malignant tumors - Metastasis- Atypia - Etiologic agents: chemicals. physical and viral - Mechanism of action of carcinogens and DNA repair systems - Molecular basis of cancer - Biology of tumor growth – Principles of targeted therapy - Models of carcinogenesis –
Pathophysiology: Thermoregulation _ Hyperthermia and fever. Diabetes. Gout. Atherosclerosis, thrombosis, embolism. Liver steatosis, AFLD and NAFLD. Heart failure and hypertension. Pathogenesis of the main respiratory diseases and respiratory failure. Qualitative and quantitative alterations of blood cells. Non-inflammatory edema. Osteoporosis. Obesity and malnutrition. Altered production, transmission, reception and signal transduction of hormones.
