Objectives

Aim of the integrated course of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases is to offer to the students knowledge and skills on the principal respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. For this reason all the topics are treated on the basis of the following pattern:
1. Classification: physiopathological, pathological and clinical
2. Epidemiology
3. Risk factors and etiology
4. Pathophysiology and pathogenesis to understand the clinical presentation
5. Pathology and its correlations with the clinical presentation
6. Symptoms and differential diagnosis
7. Schedule of diagnostic exams
8. Prevention
9. Treatment

Prerequisites

The students have to take the exam of Pathology, Pathophysiology and Clinical Methodology

Contents

All the topics have been treated on the basis of the following pattern:

Teaching unit
Respiratory pathophysiology
- Evaluation of patients suffering respiratory diseases
- Physiopathology and indications of the diagnostic investigations and measures to evaluate pulmonary function, particularly pulmonary function test, bronchial challenge test, DLCO, arterial blood gas test,
- Definition, physiopathology, classification, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic respiratory failure

Teaching Methods

Teachers base the lectures on the presentation of different topics and clinical cases using slides and video. Moreover the students are involved in the lessons and this interactive teaching is more evident during the optional programs organized by each teacher.
The professional training is performed in different clinical units and in laboratories where students learn symptoms, physical examination and their interpretation on the basis of the patients’ medical history; pulmonary functional tests, non-invasive and invasive diagnostic examinations in thoracic as well as in cardiovascular diseases. Students attend diagnostic examinations and, when possible, thoracic and vascular surgical procedures.

At the end of the course teachers will give to the students slides /video used during the lessons

Verification of learning

The examination is based on an oral question which allows to evaluate the readiness of the students (knowledges, ability to link them using proper terminology) in each teaching unit.
The final grade is decided by all teachers and it represents the student’s comprehensive knowledge of all matters included in the integrated course
