Objectives

The person graduated in Obstetrics will be required to acquire the basic knowledges in the field of
the demo-anthropological disciplines, General and Social Pedagogy and General Psychology, in order to be able to activate and manage a relationship with the woman and the couple in the different ages of life and in particular during the pregnancy, birth and postpartum, respecting the cultural differences.

Expected learning results in regard to

a) Knowledge and understanding ability
The person graduated in Obstetrics, through the basic knowledges in the field of
the Demo-anthropological disciplines, General and Social Pedagogy and General Psychology will be required to have acquired.
- an aware attention to the variety of procedures connected to the different moments of the reproductive cycle, in particular to the ones of pregnancy and birth, and an incisive view about themselves and their own culture as well. The graduate has to be able to conduct a problematic reflection about the role of the obstetrician in the present society, considering the past one in the western society or, even now, in different societies from ours.
- abilities in the pedagogical field, directed in particular to activate and manage an helping and therapeutic relationship with the user, his/her family, respecting the cultural diversities, ethnic, generational and gender.
- comprehension ability of the psychological aspects connected to the different life moments and, in particular, to the moment of gestation; independence of judgement of the psychic pathologies, typical in the state of pregnancy and post partum with a basic counselling ability, for foreign users as well.

b) Applying knowledge and understanding
She/He has to be able to use theoretic knowledges coming from Demo-etno-anthropolical disciplines, from General and Social Pedagogy and Psychology to understand and recognize the needs of the woman and/or the couple in the various parts of the reproductive life and in the own social contest, taking, where needed, the right counseling interventions focused on managing the problematic situations.

c) Making judgements
He has to show an ability of right thinking and judgement autonomy, ability to recognize and respect the culture, the values, the rights of women, couples and groups in order to be able to provide and manage the obstetric support in various contests and healthcare services (hospital, territorial, domestic)

d) Communication skills
She/He has to develop
- communication skills appropriate in respect to women, couples and groups of various ages and of any social and cultural origin and in respect to health professionals, in verbal, not verbal and written form;
- planning ability of informational interventions or specific educational projects oriented to the promotion, health maintenance and reduction of risk factors addressed to the woman and/or to the community.

e) Learning skills
She/He has to develop the following self-learning abilities
- She/he has to develop independent studying abilities
- show abilities to develop doubts and put up with the uncertainties coming from studying and from the practice.
- develop the ability to wonder about in relation to the practice of his/her activity, asking pertinent questions in the right places and times and to the best interlocutors.
- show ability and autonomy in seeking the necessary informations to solve problems or uncertainties from professional activity, critically selecting secondary and primary sources of the research facts.

Contents

General Psychology
A) The course aims to present the main aspects of General Psychology.). The main topics of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Behavioral Analysis (BA) will be discussed, such as: learning, shaping, schemate, automatic processes, " duties", cognitive restructuring, and the relationships between emotional processes and cognitive processes.
B) Furthemore, the P-A-C (Parent-Adult-Child) model Transactional Analysis (TA) will be presented and compared to the CBT and how the parts of “self” interact into the transactions.
C) Finally, the course includes the presentation of Positive Psychology and its usefulness in various psychotherapeutic contexts.

Demo-anthropological disciplines:
First phases of cultural anthropology and further development - Perspective of the demo-etno-anthropology
Objects and methods of the anthropological research - Concept of culture - Ethnocentrism and cultural relativism - Emic and ethic - Process of cultural dynamics - Forms of family and forms of marriage, exogamy, endogamy, explanation for the incest taboo - Rite and symbol, rites of passage - Symbolic efficacy - Social construction of the body - Anthropopoiesis - MGF. - The birth as a cultural event . Tradition, medicalization and hospitalization of the childbirth - Traditions and beliefs about the pregnancy, post partum and breastfeeding - Concept of demedicalization - Demedicalization of childbirth - The art of the midwife: limits and potentiality of this role in the technologic society



General and Social pedagogy:
- The sense of pedagogy. Person: nature and culture
- The education like “process family”
- Pedagogy and anthropology. Education and history. Neoteny. The man like rationality and self-awareness
- Health and pain. Disease and knowledge
- Care and vocation. The face and its formation. Accompany the other: the word.

Teaching Methods

Combination of both front lessons and interactive lessons with the use of computers and media (video-projections and blackboard). Dialogue urged by the teacher in the classroom. The use of an active methodology based on the use of techniques such as brainstorming.

Verification of learning

General Psychology
Final written test.
An ongoing test is scheduled.
The assessment will be applied also considering the active participation in the class and the class attendance.

Demo-anthropological disciplines:

Students are invited to do a little research collecting birth accounts with interviews with women who have given birth at home or in hospital. The research methods will be discussed in class.
Those who have done the research will present a written report a few days before the exam, which will then be presented orally during the exam, in which they will have to demonstrate that they are able to deal with the topics covered in the course.
Those who do not do the research will be required to present two essays more to the exam than the colleagues who will do it. These essays can be chosen among those indicated as "optional readings", or they can be arranged according to the interests of the student.



General and social pedagogy
The oral examination aims to verify the accuracy of the personal study, the assimilation of the content of the course, as well as the capability of a correct and critical exposition.

Entries can be made by the electronic platform (ESSE3).

Final mark of the integrated course (I.C.): an arithmetic average will be made of the votes agreed between the teachers on the tests carried out. The student will have an ongoing test (carried out according to the modality established by the teacher of reference) and if he/she wants to repeat the test, he/she can do it the day of the official test. The evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths for each individual teaching module. LAUDE can be expressed unanimously, if the final mark is 30.
Any oral exams (if requested by the student) will be held in the official day of the final test, on the base of the Faculty didactic calendar, in the presence of all the members of the commission.
The recording of the final mark will be carried out on the ESSE3 platform.
