Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)
[30/35]  COMMUNICATION SCIENCE [35/00 - Ord. 2014]  PERCORSO COMUNE 12 60

The main goal of the course is to provide the tools (theoretical and methodological) to describe and analyze a cultural process from historical, sociological and mediological point of view. The student has to acquire skills to analyze different cultural objects (novels, movies, TV series, videogames, music, advertisings, artworks). Once internalized this multidisciplinary approach to the study of cultural phenomena, the student will be able to produce his own "cultural objects" inserted in the historical period in which he lives (scripts, screenplays, videos, etc.)

Knowing the basics of sociology and communication theory.

Media have always been the main environment for the construction of identities and cultures. The course includes a first part dedicated to the science of media seen as an autonomous sphere and thus different from sociology and communication theory; the second part will be dedicated to the relationship between culture and media through the analysis of specific cultural processes and objects:
- the transformation of the novel in relation to the media evolution and to the modification of the urban context
- the conditions that led to the formation of the American imaginary in the twentieth century
- the communication of memory, of heritage and cultural institutions (museums, archaeological sites, archives) in the new digital society
- the basic role that nowadays videogames play both as a new tool for building identity and relationship with the world and with others, both as new environment of knowledge and learning
- the evolution of electronic music from the first experiments of Futurism up to techno music
In this second part, divided into specific seminars, students will choose and study, individually or in groups, one of these issues.

Teaching Methods

It is an e-learning blended course therefore a part of the educational activities consists of lectures, while the other will be interactive. Teaching is delivered in 20 hours of lectures, which are video recorded and made available to students within 5 working days. In the interactive part of the course that takes place on the online learning platform, will be offered to students tasks, exercises, team works, discussions. These activities will be coordinated by the teacher and the tutor that will provide students with general and individual feedback.
Being a course in e-learning, the concept of attendance does not imply the presence of the student in the classroom, but his participation in all educational activities. The attendance therefore implies a constant interaction with the teacher and tutor, through participation in the discussions, tasks, exercises that they suggest.
Some students will have the opportunity to attend the course by participating in working groups that will engage them in research activities and production of digital objects.
If necessary, students can request more tutorials and workshops in the classroom and online.

Verification of learning

A paper on a work chosen by the student (novel, film, TV series, videogames) that aims to verify its ability to apply the knowledge provided during the course to a specific cultural object
An oral test on the books and on all teaching materials listed in online learning platform.

The study materials are composed of different elements that clarify and consolidate the concepts and objectives of the course.
In the virtual study environment (educational platform) there are multimedia packages that summarize all the concepts proposed in the course and their mutual links, the lessons (video and loaded on the platform) and other materials in different formats (texts, interviews , simulations, seminars, workshops).
The reference texts will be indicated during the course based on the topics that the student independently chooses to study in depth.
If requested, foreign students attending the course (e.g., Erasmus students) can be provided alternative references in English. In this case
their knowledge will be tested in English.

More Information

In the learning platform Moodle there are several multimedia materials (slides, texts, interviews, simulations) that summarize and deepen all the concepts proposed during the lessons.
Students with special needs may benefit from a Disabled Office ( )
that certifies their difficulties in order to arrange individualized programs and can suggest specific learning methods*.
