Objectives

The course aims at providing students with the linguistic and the metalinguistic knowledge and competences of German language and culture.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- Students will have to achieve a written and oral linguistic competence at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (cfr. http://people.unica.it/ilariameloni/files/2017/06/dalframeworkeuropeo.pdf)
- From the metalinguistic viewpoint, the students will acquire good skills on German Phonology, Phonetics and Morphosyntax.
- Students will have an adequate knowledge of German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- Students will be able to understand and describe the metalinguistic features studied during the course and apply them to the analysis of short sentences and texts.
- They will be able to recognize, describe and classify the main sounds of German language;
- Within the A2 level of CEFR, they will be able to interact in German in different communicative contexts;


MAKING JUDGEMENTS
- Students will distinguish, among the theories studied, the most appropriate ones to analyse texts.
- They will evaluate contexts and choose the most effective communicative strategies.
- Students will be also able to compare and describe the main linguistic differences between German and Italian.


COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Students will:
- understand texts and conversations in German;
- effectively and efficiently convey information and ideas (at the A2 level);
- discuss and present the metalinguistic issues studied (in Italian).

LEARNING SKILLS
- Students will acquire those tools, which will enable them to autonomously study and increase their linguistic and metalinguistic skills in the German language and culture.

Prerequisites

- excellent competence in the Italian language
- consolidated knowledge of Italian grammar;
- consolidated knowledge of grammatical terminology.

Contents

Il corso si propone di introdurre allo studio della linguistica tedesca affrontando le questioni basilari negli ambiti della fonetica e fonologia, della morfologia e della sintassi. La riflessione metalinguistica avverrà in prospettiva contrastiva con l’italiano, in modo da evidenziare convergenze e divergenze tra i due sistemi linguistici.

Contenuti parte teorica (linguistica):
- Introduzione allo studio della linguistica tedesca
- Fondamenti di fonetica e fonologia
- Ortografia
- Cenni sulla storia della lingua e periodizzazione del tedesco
- Morfologia: concetti introduttivi di base, parole declinabili e non, flessione del verbo, del sostantivo, degli articoli, degli aggettivi e dei pronomi. Voci interrogative, Abtönungspartikeln e preposizioni
- Cenni di sintassi (frasi principali e frasi secondarie, connettori coordinanti e subordinanti).

Teaching Methods

- Lectures (20 hours)
- Practical classes (lettorato, 130 hours taught by a mother-tongue German instructor)

Lectures and practical classes will be in presence.

Verification of learning

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: combined written and oral tests.
1) WRITTEN TEST: a) Grammar exercises, vokabulary, b) a reading comprehension test (Leseverstehen) and a short composition (Textproduktion)c) Hörverstehen; The use of monolingual dictionaries will be permitted only for the “Textproduktion”.
The vocabulary and grammatical structures are based on the book used for the practical classes. The grammatical structures to be tested are listed above.
The written test is valid for two sessions within which the examination (written and oral) must be completed.

3) ORAL EXAMINATION: In the oral examination students will be invited a) to discuss in German about simple and routine tasks and to talk about German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde) b) to comment upon their written tests, particularly the theoretical part.

3) Two mid-term assessments will be organized (Strukturen and Lexik). Both non-attendant students and those, who did not pass the tests during the year, will do these parts of the exam in occasion of the complete written test.
Assessment criteria
Written test:
- linguistic competences foreseen in the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
-grammar and lexis;
- the lexicogrammatical accuracy of the composition;
-students’ skills to understand a simple text;
Students be allowed to skip the written test if they recently obtained an international certification. Minimum level: B1 (last 2 years).
Oral test:
- the students’ acquisition of the English Language at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- the ability to use the appropriate terminology in explaining contents (metalinguistic competence);
- Knowledge of the theoretical tools related to basic linguistic analysis and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline;
The final mark will be awarded on the basis of the level of learning demonstrated in each of the individual areas of analysis.
The vote is expressed in 18-30/30. To access the oral tests students must have obtained a minimum of 18/30 vote in both written tests. To obtain 30/30 cum laude students have to demonstrate an excellent competence and knowledge of all the parts of the program.
The students will be allowed to skip the written test and the conversation part of the oral exam if they hold recently obtained an international certification. ( minimum level B1).
