The course in Sociology of Political Phenomena allows to acquire the competences necessary to understand the relationship between state, society and citizens. It aims to achieve this objective through reflecting on some discourses which animate the current political debate, through the specific lenses of sociology. In line with what prescribed by Dublin Guidelines (1-5), the course provides with some useful tools to apply knowledge and autonomy of thought in the areas of analysis of social systems and interpretation of social change. It is characterised by being opened to the international dimension on few key themes and by a focus on how these are transmitted from the global level to the local level, assuming shapes specifically defined by the interactions among agents and between agents and various contexts.
In order to tackle with the topics covered in the course it is necessary to have a good preparation in general sociology, in the current social- political affairs and in the basic mechanisms of western democracies. Good ability in the analysis of texts is also required (including in English language).
Object of the course are the main features of public debate on:
1. Discourses on current forms of participation. Next to forms of traditional participations- and to discuss their changing nature- the course will examine forms of not traditional participation, including spontaneous collective action, movements and digital participation;
2. Discourses around the themes ‘populism’ and (in part in contrast) ‘active citizenship’.
3. Discourses on (geographical) mobility as a feature of intra- European social cohesion. Mobility will be discussed as a case study, allowing reflections on the characteristics of the social construction of individual agents in policies.
Lectures will be supported by material of various kind (dictionary entries, scientific articles, grey literature, video ect). This material will be given to students during the course and bibliographic details will be specified in power point material which will accompany each lecture. Attending lectures is not compulsory by highly encouraged. The introduction of online tools will ensure inclusiveness.
Verification of learning
The exam will consist in an oral examination. Questions are thought to offer the possibility to demonstrate knowledge on the phenomena object of the course, and, contextually, capacity to reflect and link various discourses and the different political levels they are born in. Questions will not imply a merely descriptive answer but the capacity to elaborate and synthetize complex texts.
18 to 22: Indicate an elementary acquisition or basic knowledge of contents and methods. The student shows modest capacity of analysis and synthesis.
23 to 26: Indicate an average acquisition of knowledge of contents and methods. Capacity of analysis and synthesis are sufficient.
27 to 30: Indicate from a good to very good acquisition of knowledge of contents and methods. The student shows good or excellent analytical skills and a very good ability to synthesize
Material is based on heterogeneous sources and is constituted by material provided in the lectures through power point slides which will be made available on line.
