Knowledge and understanding
The Teaching Unit will target :
- The learning of some the basic tools theoretical and mainly methodological, aimed to the studies of applied geography, in particular with respect to multimedia.
At the end of the course the student will posses:
- Tools to interpret, analyse and explore the territorial and cultural contexts in reference to the course of study; within which students can place their knowledge of the language of specialization, and multimedia production methods.

Applying knowledge and understanding
The skills to be developed concern:
- The ability of trans-scale geographic analysis
(between the observation of the local and the context of globalization).
- The ability to capture some relevant topics of contemporary geographical issues;
- The ability to adapt knowledge to interpret the complexity of the main territorial issues in different globalized contexts;
- The ability to master tools and research methods to conduct different research surveys in Europe, in America and in the global South (in particular with multimedia method).

Making judgements
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Use geographical knowledge to apply linguistic, cultural and multimedia products within various geographical areas of reference;
- Set up a research work in the geographic discipline, particularly in its social, territorial and cultural applications, and through multimedia tools, identifying some issues to be surveyed critically and read up on what is produced in that regard by existing literature and web production.
- Master tools and research methods to carry on different research in the countries of specialization language
- Manifest autonomy of judgment

Communication skills
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Partecipate in a working group and be able to analyze social phenomena from multiple points of view, seeking alternative and original solutions;
- Practice specific communication skills
- Explain clearly (with the multimedia tools) their knowledge and their research in relation to the different interlocutors (specialists and non-specialists)

Learning skills
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Use bibliographic, multimedia and web/multimedia tools (video, sound, photography ...), in both Italian and foreign language, to update their knowledge and skills;
- enhance the transdisciplinary dimension of geography through comparison with other disciplines
- apply the acquired knowledge to understanding
a) cultural dynamics of the present world in particular on urban public space
b) the geo-political and cultural dynamics of the present world


The student must be able:
- to identify geographical issues and know how to frame the general relationship between society, culture and territory in the transformation of the current globalized world.
- to read the contemporary world and, in particular, through the use of multimedia.
- It is advisable that the student has already passed a Geography Examination.


The teaching unit aims to provide an overview of the procedure for social, cultural and territorial practice of the geography, particularly in relation to the study of languages and to de multimedia production.
The course is divided into two main parts: methodological and thematic.

Part I- Methodology (14 h). Through concrete examples, the course aims to introduce two main aspects of applied geography:
1. Critical observation of the forms of territoriality and territorialization, through the analysis of the social practices of the inhabitants and "territorial actors" (in particular i urban public spaces), also in relation to rhythms and temporalities.
2. Geography and multimedia. Presentation, critical analysis of the main multimedia methodologies applied to geography: the visual (photography, video), sound (voices, languages, sounds), the web-documentary.
Analysis of several case studies in different geographical areas

Part II Topics (1 h, including 6h exercises in the field or in the classroom)
1. Analysis and interpretation of urban public space (practices, sounds, languages, rhythms and urban temporalities);
2. Migration and communication: the opportunities of applied geography trough multimedia tools.
3. Territorialization and planning. The Urbanization on the Sud Global World.
4. Culture and territory: cultural heritage, art, literature, photography and geography

Teaching Methods

The course will be done largely through lectures, which calls for the active participation of students. Some insights will be carried out through the exercises performed in class or on the field. Most classes will make use of multimedia tools (slides, web, video, photographs, sound tracks).

To meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, the possibility of live streaming lessons or recordings of the same available online is provided. Furthermore, the exercises can be carried out through forms of remote interaction with the available IT supports.

Verification of learning

For students attending the course, the assessment consist of an interview (estimated two-thirds of the final grade) and the presentation of a synthetic paper ant multimedia work (between 10.000 and 15.000 characters) on a topic to be agreed by the teacher (estimated for 3/4 of the mark). The acquisition of skills will be assessed through the demonstration by students of the ability to use geographical and methodology knowledge, useful in placing linguistic and cultural products within different territories of reference. More precisely, the interview aims to assess the capacity of learning and critical interpretation of the part I - methodology (critical observation of the social practices and multimedia applied to geography), and the part II thematic, through main fields of applied geography (analysis of urban public spaces, migration in the contemporary world, spatial planning, culture and territory).
The ability to establish connections between different subjects and mastery of expression of the specific geographic language will be an additional criterion of appreciation of the audit.
Non-attending students could be exempted from the implementation of the paper, and the assessment will also take on an additional reference text (by agreement with the teacher)
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that they have acquired an excellent knowledge of all topics covered during the course, to possess critical skills and full mastery and mastery the expression of specific geographic language.

More Information

Some documents will be provided by the teacher during the course. There will be research on websites. It requires the use of a geographical atlas. In view of the presentation of different multimedia materials and exercises to be carried out in the classroom it is strongly recommended to attend the course.
The non-attending students are recommended to contact the teacher well in advance of the date of the oral appeals to agree readings and other multimedia materials.
