Objectives

The course provides the basic concepts of ecological sciences and mechanisms which control the structure and functioning of biological systems, including processes and interactions between biotic and abiotic compartments.

Environmental Botany modul (BIO/03)
The course aims to provide basic knowledge on the relationship between plants and territory. In particular, it aims at defining the biogeographical distribution and ecological characteristics of the vegetation.
The students will acquire the ability of interpreting plant landscape and will become able of managing the plant resources and preserving plant biodiversity.

Prerequisites

Fundamental knowledge in Chemistry, Animal biology and Plant biology

Extensive knowledge of systematic Botany and basic knowledge of Geology, physical Geography and Cartography.

Contents

The course of Ecology will last about 10 weeks.

FIELDS OF ENQUIRY OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL BOTANIC
DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENT
Abiotic component:
- Climate and climatic factors; Bioclimate and the main bioclimatic Indices.
- Substrate and soil.
Biotic component:
FLORA AND VEGETATION.
- Methodologies in floristic studies: floristic Richness; the biological Forms and biological spectrum.
CHOROLOGY
- Origin and distribution of the vegetation: the centre of origin and the centre of distribution.
- Concept and characteristics of the areals; Vicariance; Areal dynamics. Regression, expansion. Different typologies of alien species.
- The floristic territories: floristic kingdoms, regions, provinces and districts.
- The chorotypes in the Italian flora. The chorological spectra.
- Hystory of flora.
THE CONCEPT OF VEGETATION AND OF VEGETAL COMMUNITY.

Teaching Methods

Classroom lectures through Power Point presentations
Laboratory exercises at DISVA and at the LIVING-LAB at Santa Gilla (Laboratorio Sperimentale di Acquacoltura)
Field trips in coastal Lagoons (Santa Gilla), Molentargius Regional Park; freshwater habitat;
Use of laboratory instruments and field equipment;
Classroom discussions on current environmental issues
Computer exercises and analysis of ecological data using specific software (GS +; Brodgar)
Practical exercises for the bibliographic research of
scientific articles: how to construct a scientific article

Environmental Botany modul (BIO/03)
Lectures (32 hours), training on biological and chorological spectra, on bioclimatic indices (12 hours) and excursions on field (12 hours).

Final exam: oral (permitted for students who attended 60% of lectures and 100% labs)
