This course, starting from the evaluation of the current state of the various environmental matrices and taking into account the most recent environmental protection laws allows students to acquire the necessary tools for detecting and controlling the environmental risk factors and planning specific preventive measures for the protection of human health. Students will have the opportunity to learn issues related to quality and safety of fish and fishery products and achieve skills in methodological and technical application for the evaluation of hygienic quality of water, fish and fishery products.
With regard to the Dublin Descriptors , learning results will be:
Knowledge and understanding: understanding of interactions between environment and health. Acquisition of basic scientific knowledge concerning the environmental hygiene issues.
Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to apply analytical techniques for monitoring and prevention of environmental risks.
Making judgements: ability to evaluate environmental hygiene issues, analyze experimental data and explain the results.
Communication skills: ability to use appropriate language expressions in speaking and writing about environmental hygiene.
Learning skills: learning the basic concepts of environmental hygiene and developments in Knowledge with respect to the identification and evaluation of risks associated with environmental factors from the literature.
The student should possess good skills of chemistry (useful), microbiology (essential) and general hygiene (essential)
Meaning and content of Environmental Hygiene. Importance of environment on human health. Water, air and soil: environmental determinants of health. Atmospheric air. Sources, characteristics and dynamics of air pollutants. Air pollutants dispersion and removal. Harmful effects of air pollution on environment (climate, plants, animals, materials) and humans. Air pollution control laws.
Indoor air. Microclimate and environmental health. Microclimate evaluation. Indoor air pollution (physical, chemical and biological pollutants). Environmental microbial monitoring techniques for the assessment of hygienic status of indoor air and surfaces (Practical experience).
Waste waters. Characteristics and treatment of urban, agricultural and industrial waste waters. Environmental impact of wastewater and effect on human health.
Municipal solid waste. Classification and characteristics. Hygienic and environmental considerations regarding the main solid waste treatments.
Water. Classification and quality of surface ground and meteoric waters. Monitoring and control of water quality. Drinking water quality standards. Drinking water treatment methods. Sea water quality standards.
Food hygiene. Safety and quality of fishery products and bivalve molluscs. Chemical and biological contamination
Practical experiences in laboratory
Microbiological analysis of drinking water and sea water: determination of microbiological parameters related to fecal pollution, determination of total bacterial counts.
Microbiological analysis of bivalve molluscs: determination of beta-glucuronidase positive E. coli according to the ISO 16649-3 and food-borne pathogen Salmonella spp. according to the ISO 6579.
The teaching modality will consist in frontal lectures (40 hours) and laboratory experiences (12 hours). The lessons will be supported by power point presentations.
Verification of learning
The final exam consists of 3 open-ended questions and a discussion on the laboratory techniques showed during the practical lab experiences. The final grade takes into account
acquired knowledge of the topics of the course,
capacity and mastery of the expressive language of science
capacity for synthesis and ability to graphic expression, when necessary.

The final grade is expressed out of 30 and take into account the overall assessment of the student during the course (ongoing tests and participation in laboratory experiences) and the skills demonstrated during the examination where the student is expected to have at least a sufficient preparation on the basic concepts of the discipline.
Consequently, the judgment can be:
a) Fair (18 to 20/30)
The candidate demonstrates little knowledge acquired, superficial level, many gaps. Expressive abilities modest, logical capacity and consequentiality in the fitting of the subjects at elementary level; poor capacity for synthesis.
b) Moderate (21 to 23)
The applicant demonstrates a discreet acquisition of knowledge but lack of depth, with a few gaps; acceptable mastery of the language of science, logical capacity and consequentiality in the fitting of the arguments of moderate complexity, more than enough capacity for synthesis and the ability to graphic expression acceptable.
c) Good (24 to 26)
The candidate demonstrates a rather large knowledge, moderate depth, with small gaps; satisfactory mastery of the expressive capabilities and significant scientific language; good capacity for synthesis and ability to graphic expression more than acceptable.
d) Outstanding (27 to 29)
The candidate demonstrates a very extensive knowledge, well depth, with marginal gaps; remarkable powers of expression and high mastery of scientific language; good competence and high capacity for synthesis and graphic expression.
e) Excellent (30)
The candidate demonstrates a very extensive and in-depth knowledge, gaps irrelevant, high capacity and high mastery of the expressive language of science; aptitude to make connections between different subjects, excellent ability to synthesize and very familiar with the expression graphics.
The praise is attributed to the candidates clearly above average, and whose notional, expressive, conceptual, and logical limits, if any, as a whole are completely irrelevant.
