Giovanni M. Chiri born in 1971, I graduated in Palermo in 1998.
Here I studied architecture with Francesco Cellini, Roberto Collovà and Marcella Aprile in a cultural environment including, among others, Pasquale Culotta, Giancarlo Carnevale, Angelo Torricelli and Giuliano Leone. Since 2001 I have been involved in the academic activities and scientific production of the DICAAR (formerly Department of Architecture).
Researcher since December 2008.
Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design (ICAR14) from 2015.
My main teaching and research areas revolve around the theme of Architecture of the City understood in its systemic dimension and relative to the different scales of the planning.
In 2009, I turned to the study and assessment of microclimate efficiency in the urban fabric and the testing of methodologies and interdisciplinary processes of urban design.
I am a member of the groups for programmes such as the PRIN (Gianni Fabbri as 2007 National Coordinator) and for local research; I have worked as organizer and coordinator in several international workshops, including: SEW 07 with OMA (Rem Koolhaas and Floris Alkemade) and Back to Maddalena (UNICA – Harvard Design School). I was lecturer at the feasibility study for the Museum of Nuragic and Contemporary Art (Independent Region of Sardinia), the Pre-feasibility study for urban regeneration of the District of Sant’Elia in Cagliari (Independent Region of Sardinia), the Preliminary Design for the EEUR2012 campus in Cagliari (regional office for the right to education in Cagliari) and designer of the Plan of La Maddalena with Enrico Corti (Municipality of La Maddalena). As part of the Italy-Guangdong international partnership programme, sponsored by the MFA and the Conference of Deans of Architecture Faculties, I acted as representative of the Faculty of Cagliari in the “Tyrrhenian Platform” cluster of schools (UNICA-UNIGE-POLITO-UNIFI) and as consultant for the work on urban design of Zhaoqing planning & urban design Bureau (Guangdong-PRC). In 2009 – with Pierre Alain Croset, Liliana Bazzanella, Gustavo Ambrosini and Michele Bonino I won the competition to redevelop the commemorative Arch Square and the lakefront in Zhaoqing (Guangdong-PRC), a project that was awarded by OICE and displayed at the 2010 Expo in Shanghai in the House of Excellences in China – China Italy Architectural Organization. Currently, I am involved in projects of international cooperation in support of the Archdiocese of Nyeri in Kenya, in the Plan of Urban Rehabilitation of the Hospital area, Botanical Gardens and Amphitheatre in Cagliari as well as providing scientific support to the Independent Region of Sardinia in the Project Iscol@ – New relationships between design and pedagogy for the schools of the region.
Every year I work on the Integrated workshop of Architectural Design of the first year of the Master of Science in Architecture (14 credits).
